Barbara Bryan AFIAP FAPS
My passion for photography was kindled by my father who worked at the Kodak Research Laboratories in Melbourne, Australia, then ran his own camera repair business.
After many years of wilderness bushwalking, skiing and travel photography, I did a black and white photography course at Wangaratta, in regional Victoria, where I lived for seven years prior to moving to Sydney in New South Wales. This resulted in many years of making wet darkroom monochrome prints before my transition to digital photography.
In Sydney I embraced the many opportunities for courses, exhibitions and involvement in photographic societies and the professional industry. Since joining the Australian Photographic Society (APS) in 1995 my entries in many National and International Photographic Salons of Photography gained many awards in slide and print divisions resulting in the International Honour of AFIAP and National Honour of Fellowship of APS (FAPS).
I particularly enjoy my involvement with the Contemporary Group within APS and exhibit with them at annual APS National conventions. Professional work included family and corporate portraiture, real estate (property) and products. I have also provided my photographic skills voluntarily - to schools, clubs, community groups and conservation organizations.
Photographing the Outback, Rural and Alpine regions of Australia has been my particular passion, influenced by my many forays into the natural environment of our unique continent, but I also love doing creative imagery, which is about ‘thinking outside the square’. I gave a presentation on this topic at the APS national convention in 2007, as well as participating in the Contemporary Group exhibition there. I am passionate about encouraging others to think more laterally in their approach to image making.
My images have been hung in dozens of photography exhibitions in galleries around Sydney and some have gained awards in many regional and national photography art prizes. I also sell prints and handmade photo cards at fairs, markets, art shows, for corporate use, and other outlets including my own website. My images are now in private collections in Australia, Canada, Denmark, Germany, Holland, New Zealand, Sweden, UK and USA.
I am also represented with a Sydney based stock photography website for commercial use – www.gekkoimages.com.au
During the past six years, I have been giving presentations and judging for NSW photographic societies and national photographic competitions with some now being web-based. I have also donated many of my images to charities for fund-raising events.
I am also working on several long-term photo projects with a plan to have at least one solo exhibition soon. Enhancing awareness of our threatened natural environments is again becoming my prime motivation for image making, as we are facing major threats from climate change.
