John Nievaart

John, his wife Rhonda and their security advisor, a 12 year old Border Collie dog named Mojo own and operate holiday accommodation cottages on King Island in the Bass Strait. Am I a photographer?  ‘definitely Not!’ came the sharp reply but he does have his L plates on.

This came about by a series of guests coming from all over Australia armed with expensive looking camera equipment and chasing birds around all over the island. Now it turned out that John’s curiosity was raised by these birders and their passing comments relating to the huge variety of local bird life, and some of those species being extremely rare. John then proceeded to attempt to take snaps of whatever bird that came his way with a little three megapixel Canon, but soon found to his dismay that this was no easy project, actually, quite to the contrary.

John tells it this way; ‘As soon as one stops to take a shot say, of a bird in a tree, the bird immediately hides behind branches and twigs; or, walking along camera in hand ready to shoot anything at all, the birds just laugh and flee. Some of the braver varieties, the type of birds that like to spend time foraging on the ground, well, they just keep a huge distance once they realize they are being eye-balled, and the extra brave ones just refuse to keep still. Hence a new camera was in order, one with a huge zoom capability.

John still takes snaps of birds for his bird website but is now getting into scenery because as he says, scenery doesn’t move and you don’t have to hunt it down like a cat stalking its prey. He now has a new found respect for birders and still has his L plates on but hopes to lose them in about 100 years or so because his new camera has so many darn controls.
