Peter Hammer
My background is in a mix of physics, electronics and computing. I worked for a long time at LaTrobe University and then spent 15 years working and partly running a leading edge company manufacturing electronic controls for building automation before deciding in 2010 that the time was right to leave work and get involved with his 2 passions, photography and travel. My work with computers and electronics has meant that I tend to pick up how to use software like photoshop pretty quickly.
I have been involved with photography since the age of 10 starting out with 35mm cameras and switching to digital in 2005. At the time of writing I am using a Nikon D90 with an assortment of lenses. I enjoy especially street photography as well as landscapes and portraits (when the opportunity arises) but I will turn my hand to just about anything as there are always new challenges and things to learn. I try and be creative and a lot of my images aren't just straight shots but have some sort of processing done on them. I have entered numerous national and international competitions with an ever increasing acceptance rate and I have won a few awards both nationally and internationally. I have never done any formal training in photography and much prefer to learn from experience.
My travels have taken me over the years to every continent other than South America (a situation which desperately needs rectifying :-). The last few trips have been to places as diverse as China, USA (3 times), Morocco, UK, Italy, New Zealand, Antarctica (the mainland) plus a few trips in Australia (Flinders Ranges, Victorian High Country, Lake Mungo and other places close to my home town of Melbourne). Overseas travel can be difficult if you want to be a photographer as tours in general don't cater for those who want to be out at sunrise and sunset. I'd love to be able to lead photographic tours in various countries.
